How could I forget to post about this yesterday? I also spent a few minutes playing the Japanese version of Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 3 (Wii) at the Atlus booth. Shiren 3 explains more about Shiren’s mysterious path, for those who follow the story. With my very limited Japanese, I was able to navigate up four floors before succumbing to a much more powerful enemy.
In Shiren 3, like Izuna and Shiren DS, you get a partner to traverse the random floors with. In the demo, my partner was Shiren’s master and he seemed a lot more powerful than Shiren, which was why I constantly hid behind him while he dealt with the enemies.
Nethack was the first roguelike I played and the graphical differences between that and Shiren 3 are astounding. Just the fact that Shiren and the master look so good and move so smoothly struck me with awe. It still moves and plays like a roguelike, but the eye-candy is much appreciated.
It’s a shame that we’ll have to wait till 2010 to play the game.
