Hotlips Pear Soda

Hot Lips Soda (Pear)The first thing I thought when I had a sip of this soda was, “Wow, this really does taste like pear.” The second thing I thought was, “No, actually, it tastes like a poached pear.” I think the vanilla is what gives it that poached pear taste. If you like pear, you’ll like this soda.

Because the carbonation level in Hotlips’ line of soda is low, the soda tasted too sweet and almost syrupy to me. When I mentioned that the soda tasted a little flat in a previous review of the Boysenberry soda, someone from the company contacted me and said they purposely put less carbonation into the soda so that the fruit flavors stand out more. The flavors definitely did stand out, but so did the sweetness. I think if they want so little carbonation in their soda, they should ease off on the sweetness because as it is right now, it tastes too syrupy.

Other than that, I thought the soda had a great real pear flavor — none of that artificial stuff. I wanted to try a some with some soda water mixed in, but I ended up drinking the whole bottle before I had a chance to.

Some Stuff I Wrote

Some may already know this, but when I’m not writing here, I write in a few other places too. I write game reviews for Siliconera and I do weekly restaurant reviews for Culver City Beat. If you haven’t figured out from reading all my posts by now, I love games and food.

I don’t know if this is helpful or not, or if anyone cares, but I’m thinking about just doing a weekly or bi-weekly link dump of other things I’ve written recently. That way, people won’t be out of the loop if they only visit this site.

This week, I reviewed Elebits DS on Siliconera. The game was surprisingly fun because I was expecting something childish and boring based on the game cover. Boy, was I wrong. It’s an adventure game like Zelda, but with puzzle elements and collect-stuff elements from Pokemon.

I also wrote a review of Tara’s Himalayan on CCBeat. I’ve had lunch at this restaurant a handful of times already and I’m still not sick of it. I always order their mango lassi because well, I can never refuse it. My favorite dishes here are the momos, which are like dumplings, and the chicken tikka — a chicken curry stew almost.

Fentiman’s Dandelion & Burdock Soda

Beverages from GalcosI bought Fentiman’s Dandelion & Burdock soda out of curiosity. The ingredient list (dandelion, burdock, a bunch of other herbs including anise seed) was so strange that it sounded right up my alley. The BF thought it sounded like some sort of elixir that old men drank in the 20s.

It’s hard to describe the flavor of this soda, but I think if you like root beer, which I do, you’d probably like this one too. It has that same root-like taste that root beer does, but also has a slightly sweet tang to it that reminded me of berries. One gulp of it left my mouth tasting sweet and clean. I don’t like licorice, but the anise seed flavor was light enough not to bother me at all.

Out of all the sodas I bought from Galco’s, I like this one best. It definitely has a unique taste to it, but it’s also refreshing, bubbly, and just plain tasty. There’s really nothing I don’t like about this drink. It even has a cute dog on the label.

I give it 5 out of 5 SAMs.
