A Hiking Story: From Fail to Win

It was such a gorgeous day on Saturday that the BF suggested we go for a hike, which surprised me because usually I’m the one who comes up with hike ideas.  Since we live so close to pretty good trails, we didn’t think to do too much research before hopping into a car and jumping on the 2.

Unfortunately, the closer we got to the base of the Angeles forest, the more we realized we should have looked some information up online.  All the trails up the 2 freeway were closed! What a fail party! We couldn’t even drive past the residential area of La Canada because there was a squad car by the roadblock just to make sure people respected all the closed signs.  My guess is that they’re still dealing with clean up from the fires a few months ago.

Defeated, we got back on the freeway and decided to try our luck on some trails north of Arcadia.  We ended up at Chantry Flats along with a lot of other people who must have had the same idea to enjoy the good weather.  I was worried that the trails to Strutevant Falls was going to be crowded because the parking lot was so full we had to park a good ways away on the side of the road.

Instead of following everyone down to the main waterfall, we noticed a little turn off and a sign for a closer waterfall so we took that path instead. We met a handful of people on their way up, but overall, it was a nicely secluded hike.  There was even some water to boulder hop, or if you’re like me, more like water to slosh through in my bare feet.  I’d rather stick my feet in fast flowing, cold water than to risk slipping on a rock and falling on my head.

After hopping over some water, the BF and I decided to rest and eat some muffins we had packed. What started out as a hiking fail party ended up being one of the best hikes ever!
